GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 23 June 2017

It's been a frustrating week for reading and writing blog posts. The phone line has been down for a week at our city pad and the internet is moving at snail's pace. I spent five days at our lake house and  have nearly chewed up the 40gig of data I have per month on my phone plan so my online activities have been seriously curtailed.

In selecting posts for this week's Gems I was forced to skim read and ignore posts with titles that didn't pique my curiosity. Here goes with my selections for the week past.

1. Great to see Fran (and Carel last week) mentioned on the GeneabloggersTRIBE site (have you listed your blog there?)

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 16 June 2017

Once again I have decided to be patriotic and offer selections from Australian bloggers in this week's post. I think again this week that the cool weather has driven the bloggers indoors. I see a few blogging who have been absent for a while.

First up I mention a post that came through from Alona this morning. How about we all put our fingers to the keyboard and craft a cemetery post for Sunday, then tweet it using the hashtag #CemeteryDay.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 19 May 2017

It's dilemma time. This week has delivered a rich collection of blog posts to my RSS Feed. My issue is - do I add them all to this post or will I be selective?

I have decided to go down Ruthless Road. When I started this series of posts I planned to share 10-12 posts each week so, although I have read much of value this week, I will stick to my guns.. It would be easy to share a long list but I will go through what I have saved and select those Gems that shone most brightly for me.

1. I have to start with Alex's rallying post which resonated with a large number of commenters.
https://familytreefrog.blogspot.com.au/2017/05/bloggers-united-we-never-be-defeated.html

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 5 May 2017

Congratulations to my genimates who completed the 2017 A to Z Blogging Challenge. You have helped raise the profile of Australian Geneablogging.

The big news on the geneablogging scene this week was Thomas MacEntee's announcement that he will no longer be maintaining the Geneabloggers site. There has been some lively discussion on Thomas' decision on Facebook and other social media. I see this as a commercial decision on Thomas' part. Thomas has done a great job in bringing the geneablogging community together over the past eight years but, as a professional who needs to make a living, Thomas must do what is best for him.

The Geneabloggers brand has allowed Thomas to build up a reputation and following in the geneaworld. He probably realises that, for him, devoting time to Geneabloggers will not grow his business. He is now turning his attention to other areas including DNA - an area that is growing and may provide more commercial opportunities for him. I don't think Facebook and other social media will replace geneablogging but I do feel there will be less growth in the blogging arena as people become more comfortable in using other forms of social media for communication.

For me blogging is a convenient, dynamic platform for sharing news, opinions and stories. I'm with James Tanner on this one

Long live geneablogging.

Following for your enjoyment are some of the blog posts that resonated with me this week.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 31 March 2017

The break I took form GeniAus' Gems ballooned from a two week break around Rootstech time to something much longer. I have spent quite a bit of time this week catching up on my blog reading and I've selected a few posts to share with you.

While I have read some really good posts from the past couple of months I have restricted my selections for this week to posts written in the past week with the exception of a couple that mention the 2017 AtoZ Blogging Challenge (I'm participating over at my jillballau blog). I'd love to hear of other genies who are taking up the challenge.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 12 February 2017

I have been too busy having fun at Rootstech to catch up with blog reading this week.

I am therefore directing you to Randy Seaver's compilation of Rootstech blog posts so you can see why that is the case. Each year Randy compiles a list of all the geneabloog post with Rootstech content. Take a look and see what you are missing out on (and why I return to Salt Lake CIty for this event each year.

GAGs - GeniAus Gems - 4 February 2017

I had every intention of collating this post in the Qantas Club while waiting to take off for Salt Lake City and Rootstech yesterday but the free internet was abysmally slow so I gave up.

Here I am sitting at the desk in my hotel room where I have been awake since 2:30 am after having a really early night. I'll probably get into the timezone just prior to leaving for home.

My selections this week are all Australian - there was a flood of good blog posts in my RSS feeds which made choosing which to share a challenge. Happy Reading.

GAGs - GeniAus Gems - 27 January 2017

Yesterday, Australia Day, I spent most of my time setting up profiles on FTDNA and Gedmatch for three fab family members who took DNA tests for me.
In the evening we celebrated Australia Day with some of the family. We enjoyed a Barbie by the pool and then, in the cool of the evening, the more energetic took to the tennis court for a set or two while the kids happily played on their bikes and scooters.

I feel quite guilty that I didn't write an Australia Day post so I am going to fill this post with links to posts with an Australia Day theme written by mates I follow in my RSS feed reader .

1. A verse from Chris.

It's a short list this year probably because no-one organised a blogging event. I promise that I will coordinate an Australia Day Geneameme in 2018.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 20 January 2017

The early bird catches the worm! It's 5:00pm on Thursday afternoon and I am selecting my GAGs list a bit early because I have an important date tomorrow at The Society of Australian Genealogists and I won't be around to write a post.

I am hoping that by next week I will have some new geneabloggers to introduce to you as my gig tomorrow is presenting a Handson Blogging for Genealogy workshop at the Society. With 14 attendees the workshop is fully subscribed, teaching a small group who have demonstrated a commitment by signing up and paying to attend should be a pleasurable experience. I imagine it will be less of a challenge than in my working years when I tried to teach computing skills to high school students in a lab of 24 computers.

And here are a few of the posts I enjoyed up until 4:00pm on 19/1/2017.

1. For those of you still in holiday reading mode  some suggestions from Sutherland Library.

2. And as we're on a bookish theme here's a review from Shauna.

3. I was/am a Beatles fan. I cna see this weeks list being overrun with reviews.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 6 January 2017

After a holiday break in Hawaii with Mr Geniaus and all our descendants I am back in my geneacave.  I am sure I have missed many Gems while absent but the time spent with our living family was so precious and more important than my geneactivities.

In this post today I am concentrating on some living Gems - my genimates who have responded to my challenge to  Accentuate the Positive 2016, it takes hours to respond to this geneameme (I am yet to finish mine).

I am so grateful to those who have already risen to the challenge and I look forward to more submissions over the coming days.  I am so impressed by the progress these Gems made last year and I have learnt of new resources and cottoned on to some new ideas from reading these posts.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 16 December 2016

Where did that week go?

It's December and I am turning my attention towards living family so this will be the last GeniAus' Gems post for 2016. I will return in the first week of January.

Let's dip into my collection of saved posts in Evernote and see what we can find.

1. Janet Few asks is the 20th century really history?

2. First time I ever heard this Word of the Year.

And now for Christmas

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 9 December 2016

My week has been focused on the living family. We have celebrated a grandchild's birthday, watched two granddaughters perform in their ballet concert, attended speech days/presentations/prizegivings for six grandchildren and watched in pride as the children have made music and collected awards for their academic efforts. We have just one ballet concert and one presentation day next week and these events will become family history. I have been taking photos and diarising these events so that they will be kept alive for future generations.

In my downtime I have enjoyed reading blog posts from several corners of the earth. I have also penned our annual Christmas epistle - another means of preserving our family history.

1. Kudos to John Grenham for correcting his error.
