GeniAus - #AtoZChallenge - W is for Where

During April 2020 the month of this #AtoZChallenge I will be sharing short posts on some of the 2,000+ descendants I have identified of my 3x Great-Grandmother, Elizabeth Phipps. 

Elizabeth Phipps 1785-1869 was a convict who was transported from England to New South Wales in 1814 per Wanstead.

Where are Elizabeth's Descendants? Where have they been?

I played around with the places data in my family history program and exported a list of the places where Elizabeth's descendants have lived, worked and died. This is by no means a comprehensive list but is representative of the names in my database.

Take a look at the map I created below with the My Maps feature from Google Maps. You can move the map around and maximise and minimise any area that you wish. There are many ways you can use Google Maps to display family history data. Why not give it a go?

Walking Directions on Google Maps - Conference Goers' Resource

Tomorrow I arrive in Adelaide in plenty of time for The 13th Australasian Congress on Genealogy & Heraldry 2012. My bags are packed, hotel bookings are made and I have a list of people I hope to meet.


I booked a hotel that I thought was near The Adelaide Convention Centre, site of the Conference but just thought I'd confirm the locations on Google Maps. It's a while since I visited The City of Churches and I just wanted to get my bearings prior to arriving. 


What I had failed to notice in all the times I have used Google Maps is that, as well as giving driving directions, it provides walking directions (although this appears to be in Beta). Seems as though I have chosen well. It should take me just 4 minutes to walk the 340 metres from my hotel to the Convention Centre. Google Maps also gives directions for Public Transit - how could I have missed this?


This is a tool I will be using before I book accommodation for other genealogy conferences I may attend. It could save some long walks in foreign cities.

Thanks, Thomas, for these great instructions. You have inspired me to log on to Google Maps and play. I am finding that creating a map is quite intuitive but am experiencing a great deal of frustration because the Google site is taking ages to locate my places and add them to my map. At the moment I am favouring two maps: the first identifying the places in Australia where our ancestors have entered and left this life and in second I will identify the places where our ancestors in the British Isles were born, lived, worked and died.

If I ever get my first map completed I will post the link on Geniaus.
