Remembering Thomas

Back in March I was correcting some text on Trove and came across this article so I scheduled it to appear on Thomas' anniversary. Thomas Osborne died 72 years ago on 31 August 1948.

Trove Tuesday - Cause of Death!

I had no intention of  publishing a Trove Tuesday post this week until I came across this article which I was correcting as part of a project for my local area.

I hope those of my grandchildren who are not too fond of study don't read this post and note the cause of death.

GeniAus - #AtoZChallenge - Y is for Remembering The Young Ones

During April 2020 the month of this #AtoZChallenge I will be sharing short posts on some of the 2,000+ descendants I have identified of my 3x Great-Grandmother, Elizabeth Phipps. 

Elizabeth Phipps 1785-1869 was a convict who was transported from England to New South Wales in 1814 per Wanstead.

I haven't been able to find any of Elizabeth's descendants bore the surname Young but I have found several in the earliest generations who died at a rather young age.

Two of Elizabeth's children had short lives. Harriet Westbrook was 14 when she died and William Westbrook was only 8 years old when he died in 1829. We do not know the fate of Elizabeth's child who travelled with her to New South Wales on the Wanstead.

Several of Elizabeth's Grandchildren had short lives. Louisa Clifford lived for only four days in 1833 and her brother William Clifford for five days. Three of William John Westbrook (Magick)'s children, Susanna Rebecca Magick, Anna Harriet Magick and Hannah V died in infancy. Neither Thomas Joseph Ashton or his sibling Harriett Ashton reached the age of 1.

In the Sly family Edwin H Sly  and Ernest A Sly had very short lives. Robert H Magick died at the age of 2 in 1861, his male sibling died   1871 and George Thomas Magick was about 4 months old when he died in 1873.

Of Adelina and Thomas Hogden's offspring Robert Hogden died in 1858 before he turned 1 and Herbert Hogden was 2 when he died in 1868.

Bad scheduling on my part has placed a post about a young woman's death immediately following a post about her grandparents in, I for Inquests. The focus today is on Jessie Madeline Sly.

A short notice in a Sydney newspaper announced Jessie's death.

Death of Miss Jessie Sly.

A Gloom was cast over the town on Friday morning when it became known that Miss Jessie  Madaline Sly had breathed her last. 

The deceased lady was a daughter of Mr and Mrs W Sly, of the Black Horse Hotel, Richmond, and had been ill for some weeks Her death was not unexpected, but it was nevertheless a sad affliction to the parents and their family to lose one so fair, so young, and whose life was so full of promise. 

The late Miss Sly was only 20 years and 1 month old, and the cause of death was bronchial pneumonia supervening upon a very severe attack of influenza She had been an active worker in the Presbyterian Church, and was greatly beloved by her co-workers and the children of the Sunday-School 

The funer-al, which was largely attended, took place on Sat-urday Iast. The coffin was borne from the resi-dence of the deceased's parents to the Church of England Cemetery by two relays of carriers, all of whom were her uncles. Prior to the cortege form-ing, prayer was offered in the house by the Rev Dr Cameron. At the graveside the Rev J Howell Price conducted the beautiful service, and at his
special request the Rev Dr Cameron delivered a touching address ; he referred to the sweet charac-
ter and maidenly virtues of their departed sister,and spoke of her as first a scholar and then a teacher in the Presbyterian Sunday-school. The Rev J Howell Price spoke also, and bore testimony to the goodness of the deceased during her too short life. 

The floral tributes were very numerous, and of lovely design. The coffin was hidden by them, and four little children carried many in a large basket, The funeral was carried out by Mr Arthur Price in his usual good style.

Jessie's parents were touched by the many messages they received.

 A memorial tablet for Jessie was installed in St Peters Church of England, Richmond.

 For several years after her death Jessie was remembered by In Memorium Notices in the local paper.

Killing them off

Although I didn't take part in the Genealogy Do-over this year I made a concerted effort to go through my database and look for unsourced or unsupported assertions, sources in the notes field (from an earlier sotware program) , missing BDM data, typos and other odds and ends. The closer the relative is to me the more effort I put into adding to their records. If it's  somethone like a fourth cousin's husband I give him less attention. I am pleased to report that I have amended and added to hundreds of my records  but I still have quite a way to go.

One of the things I have been trying to find are death and burial dates for many of the people in my GeniAus database using The Ryerson Index, Ancestry, FMP, Heaven Address, Google and online cemetery databases.. Realising that many people drop off their perches before they hit 90 I have been looking for deaths for anyone who would be over 80 if they are still kicking. I feel quite guilty when I am trying to  Kill someone off  in my database.  

A few weeks ago I came across an elderly cousin of my Mum's who is in her late eighties; she is very sprightly and sharp as a tack. When I was chatting with her I felt quite guilty as I had recently been searching all over the place for a record of her death.

Do you get an attack of the guilts when trying to assign relatives to agrave?

Heaven Address

Sometimes as I am practising Tangential Genealogy I find some great new stuff.

Occasionally when I search for an ancestor's name on Google I am directed to the Heaven Address site where I might find death and funeral details, sometimes there are tributes posted by family and friends and sometimes there is a collection of photos of the deceased. Until I returned this week the  only entries I found at this site were only for deaths in recent years.

On its home page Heaven Address claims to be "the respectful online memorial community to honour and celebrate the lives of your loved ones." One can join Heaven Address but there is no need to do this to search its database.

What I found this week, when I decided to search Heaven Address for the surname Curry for my CurryAus Surname study, were some old records back to the 1920s. In fact I found enough information to help me reconstruct a few Curry families.

I was under the impression that only funeral directors contributed to this database but it appears that  a small group of cemeteries and crematoria are adding records with maps and GPS coordinates of graves. This must be fairly new as many records, such as William Curry's (below) indicate that they have not yet been inscribed.

Beware the Ides of March

In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar the Soothsayer warned us to "Beware the Ides of March."

I took a look at my family tree to see if 15th March had been an inauspicious day for the ancestors. It wasn't particularly in the deaths and burials department!
