Blog Caroling - Downunder Style

Footnote Maven aka LindaRae Palmer was one of my first online genimates. Each year Footnote Maven challenges we genies to blog or post to Facebook our favorite Christmas Carol for her Blog Caroling activity. Read all about it here and please join in.

I first participated in 2010 and, because the carols I nominated then remain my favourites I am editing and resharing that post for 2017.

Blog Caroling - Downunder Style

In Australia where Christmas falls in our hot and humid summer we sing traditional carols and Christmas songs about snow and mistletoe and open fires with gusto.

My favourite carols are those that are written with our Australian conditions in mind. I recently blogged about Six White Boomers - one of my favourite fun Christmas songs. Another favourite is Aussie Jingle Bells in a Rusty Holden Ute.

We also have some beautiful  Christmas carols. One of my favourites, because it conjures up memories of a solo sung by my angelic, blonde six year old son surrounded by classmates in his school's Christmas concert many years ago, is The Silver Stars are in the Sky. There a a few versions of this carol on Youtube, I am posting one by The David Jones Choir, the choir members are staff of Sydney's iconic department store, David Jones.

In case you feel like singing along here are the lyrics:

The Silver Stars are in the Sky
Words: John Wheeler.  Music William G James

The silver stars are in the sky,
The red-gold moon goes riding high,
O, sleep my little one sleep!
  Once long ago, against her breast,
A mother rocked her child to rest,
Who was the Prince of Heav'n above,
The Lord of happiness and love.
O, sleep, my little one sleep!
  The boobook calls across the night,
The brown moths flutter in the light,
O, sleep, my little one sleep!
  In Bethlehem long, long ago,
When roads and paddocks gleam'd with snow;
On this same night, that mother mild,
Lull'd into dreams her royal child.
So, sleep, my little one, sleep!

Another favourite that conjures up images of our red, dusty plains is "The North Wind is  Tossing the Leaves". This Youtube version is by Bucko and Champs who have posted a great collection of Australian Christmas Music on Youtube.

The North Wind
 Words: John Wheeler.  Music William G James

The north wind is tossing the leaves
the red dust is over the town
The sparrows are under the eaves
And the grass in the paddock is brown
As we lift up our voices and sing
To the Christ child the heavenly king.
The tree ferns in green gullies sway
the cool stream flows silently by
the joy bells are greeting the day
And the chimes are adrift in the sky
As we lift up our voices and sing
To the Christ child the heavenly king.

FM'S TRADITION OF BLOG CAROLING!

My mate FootnoteMaven has once again issued this call:

"Yes, Geneabloggers it's time for fM's favorite Christmas tradition. From the comfort of my blog, with Hot Toddy in hand, my flannel jammies and furry slippers on, I will blog my favorite Christmas Carol on Sunday, December 21. (I sing so much better online than in person!)

So my fellow GeneaBloggers, I challenge each of you to blog your favorite Christmas Carol - Blog Caroling. We'll all sing along! (Blog Caroling is posting the lyrics, youtube video, etc. of your favorite Christmas carol on your blog.)"

This year I have selected a traditional Australian carol "The Three Drovers" (1948, Words by John Wheeler  and Music by William G James) performed by The Sydney Philharmonia Motet Choir. I love this carol because it relates to Christmas in our Australian environment and is set to beautiful, joyous music.

Lyrics

Across the plains one Christmas night
Three drovers riding blithe and gay,
Looked up and saw a starry light
More radiant than the Milky Way;
And on their hearts such wonder fell,
They sang with joy. 'Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel!'

The air was dry with summer heat,
And smoke was on the yellow moon;
But from the heavens, faint and sweet,
Came floating down a wond'rous turn;
And as they heard, they sang full well
Those drovers three. 'Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel!'

The black swans flew across the sky,
The wild dog called across the plain,
The starry lustre blazed on high,
Still echoed on the heavenly strain;
And still they sang, 'Noel! Noel!'
Those drovers three. 'Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel!'

Blog Carolling with fM

It's wonderful to see Footnote Maven who has had a tough year with a number of huge health challenges continue her tradition of Blog Carolling.

I am a little late with my submission, An Australian Christmas Carol. The recording I have chosen is from a primary school in Victoria, Australia, Eltham East Primary School. I love this carol because it captures the Australian environment at Christmas time.

The carol is by John Wheeler with words by William G James

The north wind is tossing the leaves.
The red dust is over the town;
The sparrows are under the eaves,
And the grass in the paddock is brown;
As we lift up our voices and sing,
To the Christ-child the heavenly King.
The tree ferns in green gullies sway;
The cool stream flows silently by;
The joy bells are greeting the day,
And the chimes are adrift in the sky,
As we lift up our voices and sing,
To the Christ-child the heavenly King.

Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories 2010 - December 21 - Christmas Music

"It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas".  I worked till 6:30 pm tonight and then spent a couple more hours Christmas shopping.With only three more shopping days I realise that I had better put my skates on or I might have some disappointed family members on Christmas morning.

As time is precious and I want to share some Aussie Christmas music I am going green - ie I am recycling a post I submitted for Blog Caroling with The Footnote Maven.
