Trove Tuesday - A question answered

Two years ago I wrote this post, Do you know Nellie Francisco?, which I will copy below.
at the end of the post I posed a question to which I now have an answer. Please read on....

Do you know Nellie Francisco?

Going through an old photo album with my Mother today we came cross this photo "That's Nellie Francisco, I was her bridesmaid", Mum said.

Knowing that the photo was taken in Cobar I had a look at the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages Online Historical Indexes. I put Francisco in the Brides Last Name at Marriage box, selected a date range of 1935 to 1945 and Cobar as the District where the event was registered.  Here is what I found.

It appears that Nellie (Ellen Elizabeth) became Mrs Jack Richard Buckley in 1940.

Mum couldn't recall the name of the little flowergirl. I wonder who she was?

I go back to Trove every now and then to repeat my searches. As I had a few minutes to spare recently I popped the terms Elsie Duncan Cobar into the search box to see what new items I could find and I was rewarded with an answer to my question. The little girl's name is Melva Bourne. You can read all about the wedding in this report that I found on Trove.

1940 'WEDDING.', Molong Express and Western District Advertiser (NSW : 1887 - 1954), 6 April, p. 8, viewed 18 March, 2014, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article140648797
This example demonstrates the value of redoing our Trove searches.

Do you know Peg?

I recently found this photo of Mum with two of her sisters, Kathleen and Eileen, and a friend named Peg. It may have been taken in Cobar or Kensington, NSW in the early 1940s.

Do you know Peter Hayes?

I am pictured here in 1951 holding hands with a smart young man named Peter Hayes. I wonder who he is and where we were when this photo was taken. Unfortunately my Mum's memory isn't quite what is was and she is unable to help me.

Perhaps Peter and his family lived near us in Kings Cross or perhaps his parents were friends of our family. Maybe one day someone researching Peter will come across this post and be able to give me an answer. Perhaps it was at a birthday party as I am appear to be eating the cake I haven't dropped on the floor at my feet. It could even be my birthday party!

Do you know Vince Slattery?

This photo of my Dad, Allan John Curry (left), and his army mate, Vince Slattery, from the 2/7th Field Regiment was taken sometime in 1944 or 1945.

I wonder if this young man is Vincent George Rice Slattery who was born in South Australia between 1918 and 1922 or it could be a number of other Vincent Slatterys that are listed on the electoral rolls available on Ancestry.

Hopefully one day one of Vince's descendants might find this post and contact me.

First Contact from a "Do you know post?

I am over the moon. From time to time I have been posting unidentified photos that I find in family albums in a series called "Do you Know?"

Just a month ago I posted Do you know E Boatswain? and this morning received a comment on that post from a gentleman who lived near my Father's family in Waddell Street, Canowindra and who said " I feel sure that Earnie Boatswain who lived in Ferguson street is the person pictured. His parents were Earnest and Emma."  The  respondent also gave me some further information in his post that confirmed the name of the school my Uncle Kevin attended and the name of a girl Kevin dated. I wonder if this gentleman has any stories about my Dad, Allan John Curry.

This is the first response I have had so far from this series of posts but it has given me encouragement to dig into the family albums once more to find more photos for my "Do you Know?" series.

Do you know Ted Jones?

I presume that the subject of this photo, Ted Jones, was a mate of my Dad's as the photo was in Dad's collection. The photo was taken in 1944 at Canungra Army Camp in Queensland.

I presume that Ted was a member with Dad (Allan John Curry) of the 2/7th Australian Field Regiment.

Should you know Ted or his descendants please let them know of this photo.

Do you know Margeret Thorson?

This photo of a cute little girl and her doll's pram taken in 1937 near Canowindra, NSW is from my Uncle Kevin's Album. I have found references to a Thorson family in Canowindra on Trove and Ancestry so guess that she was a local at the time.

I would be happy to send a high resolution copy of this image to Margeret or her descendants.

Do you know E Boatswain?

In this photo taken in or near Canowindra, NSW in 1941 is on the left my uncle, Kevin Curry and another young man, E Boatswain.

If he was the same age as Kevin young Boatswain would have been around 16 in 1941. Perhaps he was a son of Ernest Arthur and Emma Mary who lived in Canowindra around this time.

If you know this Boatswain chap please let me know and I will send a copy of the photo to him.

Do you know Alice Owen?

L-R James Ball, Daphne Gillespie, Eliza Anne Gowans, Alice Owen (great friend of Eliza), Merle Gillespie, Mervyn Faunt
I should imagine from looking at this photo that it was taken at a function in Sydney in the late 40s. It may have been at the wedding of Merle and Merv Faunt at All Saints Church, Petersham in June 1948.

Who is Alice?

Do you know Eileen and Pat Redding? 1945

This snap in my Dad's album simply says Eileen and Pat Redding, 1945.  They look like a mother and daughter to me.

As my Dad lived in Canowindra, NSW I am thinking that the Reddings may have some connection with that town or perhaps Eileen is Eileen Ursula Redding who, according to the electoral rolls on Ancestry, resided at Pacific Highway, Hornsby near my Dad's Aunt and Uncle Percy and Mary MacDonnell.

I'm hoping that one day a Redding descendant happens across this post and contacts me.

Do you know Keith McDean?

Taken at the same time and place, The Police Depot in Sydney in 1947, as the photo of my father in my In the Force post  is this snap of another young Police Officer, Keith McDean. Perhaps the photo is in Dad's collection because Keith joined the force at the same time as Dad in 1947.

I can only find mention of one Keith McDean in Australia on Ancestry. I wonder if this is Keith William McDean?

Hopefully one day this post will reach one of Keith's descendants.

Do you know Ron Dunn?

A snap from my Dad's army days.

Allan John Curry and Ron Dunn
This photo was taken near Cook on the Nullabor Plain, in 1943. I imagine that the railway lines beside the boys and their vehicle is part of The Trans-Australian Railway

Do you know Ron Dunn?

Do you know Roy Woodward?

Here is a picture of my Uncle Tom, Roy Woodward and my Dad, Allan Cury, taken in 1937. It looks as though they were having a break from the farm as I can see a Sydney tram in the background and the boys are dressed up to the nines. Maybe they were visiting Taronga Zoo or the snakes at La Perouse as trams travelled to these places.

Tom Curry, Roy Woodward, Allan Curry

I never heard Dad mention Roy Woodward so he is a mystery man. Dad would have been 18 when this photo was taken so I imagine he had reached his height of 5 ft 10 inches. It looks as though Roy Woodward was a tall young man.

Do you know Roy Woodward?

Do you know Jack Bales/Boles, Skewy Chefers or Jack Grant?

Taken in 1941 at East Hills according to the notation by my father on the reverse side this is a photo from his Army days. I think it may have actually been after July 1942 when my Dad joined the forces!

Allan John Curry (L) and mates Jack Bales/Boles, Skewy Chefers, Jack Grant
During 1942 Allan John Curry was stationed at Holsworthy Army Barracks near Liverpool in Sydney, NSW. I cannot find mention of a camp at East Hills so presume that the boys in this photo were at East Hills for some sort of swimming carnival or perhaps a bit of R&R. Maybe they were taking a dip in the nearby Georges River.

East Hills is just across the river from Holsworthy
I'd love to hear from anyone who knows the other boys in the photo. I am happy to send you a higher res of this image whose original is a typical tiny old print.

Do you know?

Following on the advice of Lorine McGinnis-Schulze I have been using my Flip-Pal to scan old photos while sitting on the couch watching television or babysitting.

I have just scanned several hundred of my Dad's many of which are labelled. There are some images of people I have never heard of - army mates, people from his home town, Canowindra, and some colleagues from the NSW Police Force. There are labelled images of places where he served in the war plus some great historical images of the Canowindra area. Similarly Mum has photos of people from her youth plus a few images of the Cobar area.  These images would be a valuable resource for those researching these people and places.

So, from time to time, on this blog I will post one of these photos and maybe someone with an interest might contact me. These posts probably won't be too relevant to my readers in the Northern Hemisphere but with luck they might just reach a relative over the seas.
