Trove Tuesday - Maided

It's not too often that I find a term for The Geneadictionary in Trove. This morning  when I was looking for something else I came across the past tense of a verb "Maided" so off I went on a tangent to see if I could find other instances of the word being used in a similar context....and I did.

The clippings that follow illustrate the meaning of Maided.

Trove Tuesday - Aunty Mary

My Aunty Mary would have been ninety-seven yesterday. I have many fond memories of Mary Aileen Curry (1923-2014) but one of my favourites is when I was flower girl at her wedding to Edward Corbett in 1957. I was so honoured to be part of this occasion and took this role seriously but, as the event did not make the local press, I have to rely on my memories and photographs.

Jill and Mary, April 1957

Trove has given me a few insights into Aunty Mary's earlier life.

1926 'Spencer.', The Gosford Times and Wyong District Advocate (NSW : 1906 - 1954), 18 February, p. 3. , viewed 26 May 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article161110901

This short snip reports on the first major challenge young Mary faced. She just took this disability in her stride and forged ahead with a happy and successful life.

1937 'DIOCESE OF BATHURST', National Advocate (Bathurst, NSW : 1889 - 1954), 28 January, p. 4. , viewed 26 May 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article160351086

The Currys were a Catholic family, until I found this snip, I thought that the name of the school that Mary and her siblings attended was different from the one cited in this article. I was obviously getting confused with the name of their Parish Church. The results above are for religious knowledge exams in the Diocese of Bathurst.

.

Twelve months later the tables had turned with Uncle Tom scoring 81 in the religious knowledge exams. I know that Aunty Mary left school after her third year of secondary education. I wonder where she worked between then and 1942. There is mention in Trove of a Nurse M. Curry at Canowindra in 1939, perhaps that was Mary.

Mary used to talk about working in Forbes but I didn't know when this started and for whom she worked.

1942 'About People', The Forbes Advocate (NSW : 1911 - 1954), 24 December, p. 2. , viewed 26 May 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article219516509

I remember this story as Aunty Mary told me that my Dad sent her money to hep buy replacement clothing which may have been hard to come by in the war years.

1945 'Advertising', The Forbes Advocate (NSW : 1911 - 1954), 5 January, p. 5. , viewed 26 May 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article218691823

So Mary was working with Goldsborough Mort before she moved to Sydney.

1945 'About People', The Forbes Advocate (NSW : 1911 - 1954), 26 January, p. 4. , viewed 26 May 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article218694258

I didn't know that Mary was a VAD volunteer during World War Two.

1948 'About People', The Forbes Advocate (NSW : 1911 - 1954), 12 March, p. 2. , viewed 26 May 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article218418670

With her younger sister, Kathleen, Mary moved to Sydney to work at Goldsborough Mort, this article tells me it was by 1948. As there was a post-war shortage of rental accommodation in Sydney Mary and Kath, who lived in Springfield Avenue, vacated their flat so that after I was born my parents could have a place of their own for our family.

1948 'About People', The Forbes Advocate (NSW : 1911 - 1954), 3 February, p. 6. , viewed 26 May 2020, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article218415232

No doubt Mary enjoyed this opportunity to return to Forbes and catch up with friends.

I previously blogged about Aunty Mary here: https://geniaus.blogspot.com/2014/07/vale-aunty-mary.html

Those of us who have relatives from rural areas are fortunate that local newspapers that are digitised on Trove give us glimpses into their lives.

Trove Tuesday - Crowds outside St Mary's

In recent weeks I have been using Trove to help me hatch, match and dispatch folk in my family tree for whom I only have year dates from vital record indexes for these events. I find Trove invaluable for confirming dates and places and providing extra details of births, weddings and deaths of  the Australian leaves on my tree.

One of the interesting articles I came across referred to the marriage of Thelma Margaret Farrell to Angus Hundy at Mudgee in 1944. Thelma shares my colourful convict ancestor, Elizabeth Phipps. While the article didn't give the Bride's full name I knew from the date of the article that it was referring to Thelma. It seems as though the wedding caused quite a stir on the streets of Mudgee, NSW.

Trove Tuesday - Fiji Wedding

I spent last Saturday attending a family wedding in Fiji. When you read this post I will be winging my way home after this celebration. For this week's post I turned to Trove to find some Fiji wedding stories.

Trove Tuesday - Yet more Pusells

We are regularly advised to return to online sources such as Trove and redo our searches. I certainly remind people to do this when I am giving presentations. So I am about to practice what I preach.

My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Pusell and I believe that nearly everyone with that surname is a descendant of my convict ancestor James Pusell.  I 'll do a simple search for Pusell and see if it turns up anything new.

The first article is a wedding report for Mum's second cousin, Horace Keith Pusell. It gives me plenty of new information to add to my Family Historian database.

1948 'PUSELL—KIRK.', National Advocate (Bathurst, NSW : 1889 - 1954), 24 December, p. 4, viewed 29 September, 2015, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article161677431
The second entry is another wedding coincidentally it is for Keith's sister, Kathleen Mavis Pusell, to Ronald Collins and it is from the same newspaper "National Advocate (Bathurst, NSW : 1889 - 1954)" which  I assume has been recently added to Trove.

I had previously seen the next few entries on the list but this one from the National Advocate about Terry Pusell was new to me. I wonder if it is the same Terry Pusell that was an Altar Boy at Keith's wedding?

1951 'BATHURST CYCLING.', National Advocate (Bathurst, NSW : 1889 - 1954), 2 April, p. 4, viewed 29 September, 2015, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article161398438
The next article from 1926 about Mum's first cousins comes from another newspaper, "Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative (NSW : 1890 - 1954)".

1926 'The Pusell Boys.', Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative (NSW : 1890 - 1954), 12 August, p. 28, viewed 29 September, 2015, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article155948184
What I found is that ten of the twenty hits on the first page of results for my Pusell search were new.

Isn't that awesome!

Trove Tuesday - Where has all the silver gone?

When helping Mr GeniAus, who has developed more than a passing interest interest in his family history, I recently found a new treasure on Trove.

In the absence of family photos of his Ball ancestors this article reporting on the wedding of his Grandparents, James Ball and Harriet Parkinson, paints a picture for us. One wonders what has happened to the cache of silver the happy couple received as wedding presents. The good news is that Mr GeniAus has the Bible which is mentioned, it has recently been restored.

A transcription of the article follows.

Source: 1916 'WEDDING BELLS.', The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 - 1950), 1 July, p. 11, viewed 6 January, 2015, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article86072617

A Quiet Wedding

As my mother's father passed away just five weeks before my parents' planned wedding Mum and Dad opted for a quiet family celebration. All of Mum's sisters manaaged to have fancy long white wedding gowns but Mum made do with a stylish dusty pink ensemble, I wonder if Mum ever regrets her choice of wedding attire. They had a quiet reception at my Grandmother's home in Kensington before setting off by train for a honeymoon in Jervis Bay.

Mum and Dad were married 66 years ago today, 7th October 1948. Today I think about the 51 years they spent together and the loving environment in which they raised me.

Trove Tuesday - A question answered

Two years ago I wrote this post, Do you know Nellie Francisco?, which I will copy below.
at the end of the post I posed a question to which I now have an answer. Please read on....

Do you know Nellie Francisco?

Going through an old photo album with my Mother today we came cross this photo "That's Nellie Francisco, I was her bridesmaid", Mum said.

Knowing that the photo was taken in Cobar I had a look at the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages Online Historical Indexes. I put Francisco in the Brides Last Name at Marriage box, selected a date range of 1935 to 1945 and Cobar as the District where the event was registered.  Here is what I found.

It appears that Nellie (Ellen Elizabeth) became Mrs Jack Richard Buckley in 1940.

Mum couldn't recall the name of the little flowergirl. I wonder who she was?
--------------------------------
I go back to Trove every now and then to repeat my searches. As I had a few minutes to spare recently I popped the terms Elsie Duncan Cobar into the search box to see what new items I could find and I was rewarded with an answer to my question. The little girl's name is Melva Bourne. You can read all about the wedding in this report that I found on Trove.

1940 'WEDDING.', Molong Express and Western District Advertiser (NSW : 1887 - 1954), 6 April, p. 8, viewed 18 March, 2014, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article140648797
This example demonstrates the value of redoing our Trove searches.

Happy Anniversary Mum and Dad

Sixty-five years ago a young policeman, Allan John Curry, married his sweetheart, Elsie, in Randwick, NSW.  As her father had passed away shortly before the wedding Elsie did not wear a traditional white wedding gown but a smart but somber ensemble.

Dad is no longer with us but Mum, although a bit forgetful, is in good health. I will phone her later to remind her about this special day.

L Plates

I'm sharing a photo from the family album to mark our 42nd Wedding Anniversary today. I did not realise that someone had put an L plate on my back as I said my farewells to our guests.

Geniaus and Friends - 8 May 2012

42 years later Mr Geniaus and I are still on L Plates.

Where is Geniaus?

Geniaus has been concentrating on creating family history over the past couple of weeks. Our youngest child who was married on May 2nd has been to focus of my attention. (Geniaus is the short person in pink right next to the bride.)

Geniaus is now taking a 'honeymoon' to Europe and will probably not be posting for a while.

After I arrive back in Australia in mid-June I will return to family history with gusto.
