GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 9 December 2016

My week has been focused on the living family. We have celebrated a grandchild's birthday, watched two granddaughters perform in their ballet concert, attended speech days/presentations/prizegivings for six grandchildren and watched in pride as the children have made music and collected awards for their academic efforts. We have just one ballet concert and one presentation day next week and these events will become family history. I have been taking photos and diarising these events so that they will be kept alive for future generations.

In my downtime I have enjoyed reading blog posts from several corners of the earth. I have also penned our annual Christmas epistle - another means of preserving our family history.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 25 November 2016

Just a month to go until December 25th - isn't that scary. One of these is my annual Accentuate the Positive Geneameme, please look out for the 2016 edition on Boxing Day. (Here's the 2015 challenge)

Now let's dive into Evernote to see what Gems I have saved this week.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 4 November 2016

From time to time I see articles about the demise of blogging but judging from the contents of my RSS feeds each week there's still a lot of blogging going on. Certainly blogs and bloggers come and go but there is a steady stream of interesting posts waiting for me each time I open my Inoreader account. Nearly each week I discover by some other social media channel a blog or two that were previously unknown to me.

Now it's time for me to delve into my saved selections and select a dozen or so to share with you.

1. My genteel self would like some of these.
http://blogs.hht.net.au/cook/the-most-superb-best-ever-dinner-table-gadget/

2. Shelley has been further exploring her Ancestry hints.

3. When I visit a library I love to browse the shelves. Joan's browsing turned up this treasure.

4. We definitely need to borrow Otsukaresamadesu from the Japanese language.
http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2016/11/untranslatable-japanese-words/

5. Meet Pauleen - the Irish radio star.

6. Norman's place is always on the itinerary when we have overseas visitors

7. A comprehensive report from Debbie.

8. Congratulations to Tiphanee.

9. There are a lot of rabbits at our house. Maybe we need some cats.

10. So many of my genimates are also bibliophiles like Alex who has been playing Bingo.

11. Just like big institutions we have to plan for obsolescence.

12. And we can't ignore the First Tuesday in November.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 21 October 2016

I had my grandparent's hat on today at one of the granddaughter's schools so this GeniAus' Gems is an evening edition.

Mr GeniAus is interviewed today at Grandparents' Day
It feels like I have read and saved lots of beaut blog posts to Evernote this week and, although I could share them all with you, I like to restrict my list to no more than a baker's dozen. My tough task for the next half hour or so is to cull my saved list. I reiterate that this list is subjective and reflects what strikes a chord with me.

5. Because I have family in Eastwood.

6. For my mates who are bibliophiles.

7. Help needed by one of the quirky blogs I follow.

8. On keeping a diary - from Patsy.

GAGs - GeniAus' Gems - 7 October 2016

Here I am back again after a longer sabbatical than I had envisaged. I had a super European holiday during the Australian winter and returned home to be hit by a few health problems. Now that I can sit at my computer in a reasonable degree of comfort once more I thought it was time to bring GeniAus' Gems back to life.

During my absence I have read several hundred blog posts on my 'phone. I tried to keep up with the Australian Genealogy ones but I had to pass on many others I usually read. My blog writing also suffered during this period but thankfully I had scheduled a few posts here and on the Geneadictionary so I still maintained a presence.

Today I'm sharing a few posts I read during the past week. I trust you find something new here to whet your appetite.

1. Shelley has given her blog and website a new consistent look.
https://twigsofyore.blogspot.com.au/2016/10/twigs-of-yore-has-brand-new-look.html

2. Lilian is taking time off from the Genealogy Expo in Adelaide to meet some of the locals.
http://researchbylily.blogspot.com.au/2016/10/a-post-about-pigs.html

3. A post for Legacy by my Canadian Genimate, Lorine.

4. I always enjoy Shauna's updates. Thanks for the Geneadictionary shoutout, Shauna.
https://diaryofanaustraliangenealogist.blogspot.com.au/2016/10/genealogy-expo-bound-other-news.html

5. Grandchildren, Gardening and Genealogy are Betty's interests. This post brightened my day.

6. Fairfield Library is publishing elected members' family histories.

7. Lois turns to Trove and adds to an ancesto's story.

8. Carmel uses school records to add to her family stories.

10. Thanks for taking up the challenge Fiona.

Unearthing Treasures

Some Sougenirs
I am supposed to be all moved in and organised in my new Geneaspace by tomorrow but I have been
distracted. Each cupboard, drawer or shelf I empty delivers some treasure that requires perusal.

Today I came across my small collection of pens, pencils and other novelties that I have collected at conferences and repositories. I've put the pens and pencils in a little container and deposited them on a shelf where they will gather dust. I can't throw them out because they remind me of how fortunate I have been to visit so many places and attend some extraordinary events.

As I was reminiscing with these writing instruments a word to describe them and the other things I collect from conferences and repositories just popped into my head.

These are some of my Sougenirs.....now I'm must away and add the term to my Geneadictionary.

Do you collect Sougenirs?

Otherwise engaged

I haven't posted on this blog for a couple of days but I have been a busy little Geneabee.

With an upcoming presentation to a local Probus Genealogy group this week I decided that my Google Search talk was a bit tired so I gave it a major makeover and I am rather pleased with the result. I usually update this talk with local examples before delivering it (and that takes a couple of hours) but it has taken me considerably more time to rejig the whole thing.

Of course Mother's Day Week was busy. Instead of hosting the family for a meal on Mother's Day we celebrated with Mum and each family in turn and that took some time but it was nice to share a meal with each of three families and have time to chat. Celebrations started on Thursday with a Mothers' Week event at a grandchild's preschool and will conclude when we catch up with our out of town daughter and family next weekend. Our wedding anniversary was wedged in there too and of course we had to celebrate our stayer status.

My family history database is still getting a going over. I have carried out first aid on several hundred more records but I have a lot of cleaning up to do. I try to devote  time to this exercise each day. I must upload the changes to my GeniAus Family site this week as it's a few weeks since I have done so.

The CurryAus Blog
I have blogged today but it has been over at the Geneadictionary and at my CurryAus blog. Do pop over and visit them sometime. CurryAus is the surname study I am working on very slowly; I use the blog to record my progress. I find it useful to record what I am doing and feel that by sharing my journey I may help others.

Thank you to all those who submitted entries in my recent competition to win a free registration to Rootstech 2015.

Where GeniAus gets a chance to play Santa.

One of the nice perks of being a Rootstech Ambassador is that I get to give some lucky person a nice Christmas present

The kind folk at Rootstech have given me "One complimentary RootsTech 2015 3-day pass ($239 value) for one of your lucky subscribers." If you have already registered for Rootstech you can still enter this competition as I will supply a code to the winner and, if you have already registered, you will get a refund from Rootstech. If you haven't registered yet winning this competition might just change your mind about attending this premier event in Salt Lake City in February 2014.

This prize only covers your entry to the event, you will be responsible for all travel, accommodation and incidental expenses.

So what do you have to do to win this prize?

You need to tell me in 50 words or less using as much Geneajargon as you can from my Geneadictionary http://geneadictionary.wordpress.com why you are or why you would like to attend Rootstech 2015. Of course you could use newly created geneajargon that can be added to the Geneadictionary. As a condition of entry you give permission for your entry to be posted in the Geneadictionary.

Please email your entries to jillballau@gmail.com by midnight (GMT) Friday 12 December.

I look forward to reading your contributions.

279 and Growing

Having plenty of material for future blog posts makes life easy.

About nine weeks ago when I had a bit of time on my hands I set up the Geneadictionary over on Wordpress. As I have been using blogger for eons this was a brave move for me. I didn't know if the Geneadictionary would be a flash in the pan or if I would be able to find enough content to maintain a regular posting schedule.

Several of my genimates look out for and even coin words and phrases to add to the dictionary, I am so grateful to them for their assistance, as I add their suggestions I try to add their names to the list of Genealogophiles at the Geneadictionary.

I seem to have developed a heightened awareness for Genealogisms which seem to jump out at me as I read genealogy news. I find myself waking up at night and grabbing my phone to add to Evernote a new word, phrase or acronym that has just hit me.

Can you believe that I have 279 entries for inclusion in the Geneadictionary saved in my Evernote folder? I think the Geneadictionary is here to stay.

Likeing Wordpress

Although I have had some Wordpress blogs for a few years I had not seriously strayed into Wordpress territory until I set up the Geneadictionary last month.

While it takes a while to get used to a new interface I am becoming more comfortable with Wordpress. I have banged on quite a bit about Blogging being a two-way street ie not just a publishing medium but a means of communication between two or more people; I like the way that Wordpress facilitates that communication with its Like button that appears at the bottom of each Wordpress blog post.

Wordpress Like Button

In Blogger we can give a quick Google +1 to a post we like but I don't get notified of any +1s my blog receives. Do you? So unless we go back to each post we have written we cannot see if anyone has quickly communicated that they have read/liked our posts.

I much prefer the Like button on Wordpress because when someone likes one of my posts I get a notification,  You can turn this off if you are overwhelmed with Likes but in my case I get so few Likes so it is great to get that positive reinforcement

Next time you read and like a Wordpress blog  remember to let the blogger know by pressing that little blue star.

This Blogger is Liked a lot.

There's a word for that...

...and if there's not someone is sure to create one sometime soon.

I am having an enormous amount of fun with my newish blog, The Geneadictionary, an online Geneaglossary of those words and phrases used by genealogists that will probably never make it into a real another dictionary. I remember the first time I heard the phrase "Genealogy Happy Dance", I had to contact the writer for an explanation. I am confident that other Genies have similar experiences. As it develops The Geneadictionary will be the place where you will find the explanations you need.

A multipronged approach has netted me a healthy list of Genea-Logisms for The Geneadictionary Suggestions from fellow Genies, a few sessions of Geneagoogling, revisiting blog posts written by certain Geneabloggers, being vigilant as I read articles and creating new words when I should be sleeping have contributed to the development of this list which resides in my Evernote account. I am tempted to share all of these at once but am exercising restraint and dripfeeding my small audience with a new offering every couple of days.

I am seeking your help. I'd love it if you would pop over to the alphabetical listing of words I have published so far and let me know of any glaring omissions or perhaps you might even be able to come up with some new words or phrases for The Geneadictionary.

Friday, August 15, 2014

Have you got a word for me?

If you have a spare minute I'd love you to pop over and visit my latest creation on Wordpress. Yes, I have decided that it's time to become competent on that platform too.

I am hoping that my geneablogging friends and genimates will contribute words, pictures and stories to the GeneaDictionary, a blog that will allow us to discuss the history and origins of the original and funky words we have coined while dealing with our geneaffliction on and offline.
