Bookmarks

One of my fave Edtech people, Richard Byrne this week posted an article "Tools and Strategies for Sharing Bookmarks" in response to a reader "who was looking for an alternative to Delicious for bookmarking and sharing bookmarks. .

I was surprised to see that he omitted Evernote as a tool for this purpose. Several years ago when Delicious changed hands I turned to Evernote for saving my bookmarks. Since then Evernote has taken over as my virtual memory.

I am wondering aboout other genealogists' bookmarking practices and if those who are Evernote users use some other tools to save and share bookmarks.

Incidentally you can see my two shared Evernote notebooks (that include lots of bookmarks) here:

Packrati.us

Two of my favourite Web2.0 applications are Delicious and Twitter. I use Delicious to bookmark, tag, save and share websites (http://delicious.com/geniaus) and Twitter to share snippets of news, info and web links (http://twitter.com/geniaus).

A new tool, Packrati.us, promises to "follow your twitter feed, and whenever one of your tweets contains URLs, we add them to your delicious.com bookmarks. Optionally, bookmark URLs in @replies to you."

I am going to try out this tool and hope that it adds some valuable links that I may otherwise have missed to my Delicious account.

Delicious - an old favourite

Family Sites. Whenever I find a website, maintained by an Australian, either devoted to the genealogy of a particular family or surname I tag it in Delicious with the tag familysite. I also tag any similar sites from overseas that have links to my family.

If you are considering creating a website you may wish to look at these sites for ideas or you may just wish to browse them to admire the work done my fellow family historians. Perhaps you'll discover a distant cousin.

You can see my lists of familysites here : http://delicious.com/geniaus/familysite. For a full list of the sites relevant to genealogy that I have tagged go here : http://delicious.com/geniaus/genealogy

If you don't have a Delicious account you may wish to sign up, - it is a free social networking site that thousands of people use to store share and discover websites online. It is one of my favourite tools.

Great new UK Resource

Read about it here: National Archives Of The UK: Royal Marines Records Available Online

I'd like to be able to use the Sharethis widget in my browser to post bits form other blogs to Blogger but it just won't work so I have to resort to copy and paste and that is inefficient. I have tried sharing withWor
dpress and Delicious and it works a treat. A search of the Sharethis Support page brings no joy neither does a Google search. I need help with this one.

Geniaus has more than just blog posts.

As the busyness of the festive season nears time to write blog posts is at a premium. However, this blog has changing content when there are no posts.

** The Twitter Updates Box on the left of the page records URLs of genealogy sites I have recently explored.

** The next box "Geniaus' new links on Delicious" provides a list of the genealogy links most recently added to my Delicious account.

** Further down in the left hand column "Geniaus' shared items" provides links to articles that I have recently read through my RSS feeds and consider of interest to other Australian genealogists.

I encourage visitors to my blog (now numbering around 200) to browse thes boxes and take a look at the links found therein.

Delicious

I have been using Delicious to save and tag my bookmarks for a couple of years both in my personal and professional life. I find it very useful for keeping track of family history links. I recently set up a separate Delicious account just for my genealogy links. Geniaus' Delicious Links . Updates will be posted to this blog via an RSS Feed.
