Aussies celebrate Canada Day

Amongst the highlights of our more recent family history were a couple of visits to Canada in 2008.  This snap of Mr Geniaus and family members was taken on Canada Day, July 1 2008, which we celebrated enjoying the festivities at historic Rocky Mountain House. Our traditional lunch included corn on the cob. We joined in the spirit of the day by wearing Maple Leaf tattoos and Canadian flags.

We have a soft spot for Canada which is in many ways similar to Australia and have fond memories of our travels there.

For my Genimates in Canada

This week we visited the grave of Jacques Cartier in the Cathedral of St Vincent in St Malo, France. I took a few snaps for you.

A New Genealogy Mystery

My genimate, Lorine MCGinnis Schulze from Canada, proudly announced this week on Facebook the publication of her first genealogy mystery. As I follow Lorine's blog I knew that this book was in the pipeline.

Lorine has subsequently shared the news on her Olive Tree Genealogy blog.

As I love this genre I wanted to purchase the title in ebook format but sadly it was only available in hard copy from Amazon.com and I was loathe to purchase that format due to postage costs to Australia. I asked Lorine if it was available as an ebook and she said that it would be coming soon. It was only a day or so when Lorine let me know that the book was now available in ebook format on Amazon and Amazon Canada. When I couldn't purchase it from Amazon.com I tried the Amazon Australia site and the ebook was available there.

The book is now installed on my phone but I must finish what I am currently reading before I dive into Lorine's book - something to look forward to.

SNGF - Not bad for a Foreigner

I don't often take part in Randy Seaver's "Saturday Night Genealogy Fun" activity becaause my weekends are usually filled with activities with my living family.

Randy's challenge this week is (in part):

For this week's mission (should you decide to accept it), I challenge you to:

1)  What states in the USA and what provinces in Canada have you visited or lived in?

2)  Either list, or make a map of them (at the http://www.defocus.net/visitedstates/us-canada.html website) and indicate the following:

red for states/provinces where you've not spent much time or seen very much.
*  amber for states/provinces  where you've at least slept and seen some sights.
blue for states/provinces  you've spent a lot of time in or seen a fair amount of.
*  green for states/provinces  you've spent a great deal of time in on multiple visits.

GeniAus' North America Travel Map

I have ignored parts 3 and 4 of Randy's challenge as my ancestors came from other countries.

I think I have done pretty well for an Aussie. The map is useful to us as Mr GeniAus and I  are planning a road trip after Rootstech 2016. I just wonder which white parts will be warm enough for touring in February!

Air Miles for the Heaven Bound

I've been researching a branch of the family who emigrated to Canada from Scotland and came across the Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia where Mr Geniaus' Great-great Aunt, Joanna Nelson Gowans,  is buried.

I found it rather funny that they offer Air Miles to those who prebook their funerals. Does this mean that if Eagles' Wings fail one can use Air Miles to catch a ride to Heaven?
