A Mother's Anguish

150 years ago today Ellen Curry, my 1st cousin 3 times removed, died tragically aged just 16 months. I cannot image the torment her mother, Mary O'Reilly, felt as she saw her toddler running towards her on that fateful day.

I found the following report of Ellen's death via Trove in The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser (Page 3 Tuesday 13 May 1862).

  1. How horrific, not something you would ever get over.

  2. Unfortunately burns were a common injury not only in children but a very common cause of death for women. Long skirts and open fires don't go together very well.

  3. What a tragic and horrendous accident. Her mother would have been distraught and I imagine have felt guilty.
