What is a Kiva loan?

"We care about families (past, present and future)"

You have probably heard genealogists mention Kiva on various social media platforms and exhort you to join up.  This little video tells the story of a  Kiva  loan and may demystify  Kiva  for you.

Kiva is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions,  Kiva  lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

There are more than 150 genealogists from all over the world who are members of The Genealogists for Families Kiva team set up by Australian genealogist and blogger, Judy Webster.

At the moment Free Trials (financed by a philanthropist) are available to new Kiva members. You can join up to make a difference by clicking this link. Please seriously consider making a loan and joining The Genealogists for Families team - "We care about families (past, present and future)"

In Australia Genealogists for Families team members have arranged face to face meetings. Two such get togethers are planned for The 13th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry to be held in Adelaide later this month.

If you are Adelaide bound how about joining Kiva and meeting up in Adelaaide.

  1. I'm pleased to see so many of our relatives, friends and colleagues joining Kiva during the free trials. After this opportunity to find out how micro-lending works, I'm sure they will be as enthusiastic as we are. Right now there are still 9,000 free loans available, so I hope some of your readers will join Kiva (and, optionally, join our lending team).
