Do you know Ted Jones?

I presume that the subject of this photo, Ted Jones, was a mate of my Dad's as the photo was in Dad's collection. The photo was taken in 1944 at Canungra Army Camp in Queensland.

I presume that Ted was a member with Dad (Allan John Curry) of the 2/7th Australian Field Regiment.

Should you know Ted or his descendants please let them know of this photo. 

From the Other Side of the Fence

My ongoing commitment to CGD sees me watching and listening to many presentations on genealogy related topics. Earlier tonight I stood on the other side of the fence.

Although I have presented to a number of audiences over the years I have never given a talk in my local area. I was thrilled when, last year, I was approached by Neil Chippendale the Local History Librarian at Hornsby Library to give a presentation in their series of Family History talks.

I was more nervous than usual prior to this talk as I felt I had to do really well for my local community. When Neil told me a few days ago that the event was sold out that made me even more nervous. My topic, Trove: a nation's treasure, was not one that I felt particularly confident in presenting but having given the talk I realise that I do know quite a bit about this fantastic resource. The good news is that techonology didn't fail, no-one nodded off to sleep and many people including a couple of librarians said that they had learned quite a few new tricks.

I got such a buzz from presenting to my neighbours who were such an appreciative audience. I thank Neil, a perfect host, who was there to greet me and help me set up; he made sure I had everything I needed and gave me a glowing introduction and vote of thanks.

Thanks also to Mark from Trove who took a look at my handouts and slides and suggested a couple of amendments. 

A Mother's Anguish

150 years ago today Ellen Curry, my 1st cousin 3 times removed, died tragically aged just 16 months. I cannot image the torment her mother, Mary O'Reilly, felt as she saw her toddler running towards her on that fateful day.

I found the following report of Ellen's death via Trove in The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser (Page 3 Tuesday 13 May 1862).

Back on Track

I had a comment on this blog post, "The Geneabloggers' Geneameme", from one of my favourite Australian Geneabloggers, Pauleen Cass.  


"Were we all too preoccupied with A to Z or Anzac Day to reply? It sounded like fun,but my creative thoughts have run dry at present. Have you had further thoughts?"

Yes, Pauleen the busyness of life took over. I had anticipated putting the meme together before my holiday but it just didn't happen. I still intend to create this challenge.

Mr and Mrs Geniaus on holiday with a little Geniaus

For the past week I have been concentrating on the living family by taking a holiday with my youngest child and her family in Western Australia.

As we were driving through a small country town Mr Geniaus said "There's a cemetery, don't you have some family members in there?" My retort was that "This is not genealogy time, it is family time."

Now I am home safe and sound I will be once more concentrating on the dead. My first  task is to finish off my presentation for Friday evening at Hornsby Library then I will return to my normal routine.

Do you take enough time out from Genealogy to concentrate on the living family?
